Moroccan Kaftan & Takchita Guide: Styles, Fabrics & How to Wear
Short answer: a Moroccan kaftan (caftan marocain) is a long, loose, single-layer robe with long sleeves, often finished with embroidery or braided trim down the front. A takchita is its two-layer formal cousin: an under-dress plus an open or buttoned over-layer, cinched with a belt. Choose a simple kaftan for everyday wear and Eid, and a layered, belted look for weddings and henna nights.
The Moroccan kaftan is one of the most recognisable modest garments in the world: long, flowing, beautifully trimmed and comfortable enough to wear all day. Whether you are looking for a festive caftan marocain for Eid, something takchita-inspired for a wedding, or a relaxed kaftan for home and holidays, this guide explains the styles, the vocabulary, the fabrics and how to wear each one with a hijab. A note on honesty first: the kaftans in our collection are Moroccan-inspired designs, not traditional handmade pieces from Morocco.
What is a Moroccan kaftan?
A Moroccan kaftan is a full-length robe with long sleeves and a straight or gently flared body. It is cut to skim rather than cling, so it moves easily and covers well when you sit, kneel or pray.
The traditional version usually has a front opening closed with many small buttons and loops, and a neckline and placket edged with hand-applied braid. Today the word "kaftan" also covers easier pull-on versions with a yoke, a tie or a sash, which is what most people mean when they shop for a kaftan dress.
Kaftan vs takchita vs jalabiya vs abaya
These names overlap, and families and regions use them differently. As a general guide:
| Garment | Structure | Typical feel | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kaftan | One layer, long sleeves, often a front placket or yoke | Elegant to relaxed | Eid, family visits, everyday, holidays |
| Takchita | Two layers: under-dress plus an over-layer, usually belted at the waist | Formal, festive | Weddings, engagements, henna nights |
| Jalabiya | One layer, loose pull-on cut, often embroidered at the neck | Easy and comfortable | Home, Ramadan evenings, Eid morning |
| Abaya | Long over-garment, open or closed, worn over clothes | Streamlined, layering piece | Daily wear, work, prayer, travel |

Tip: you can build a takchita-style look at home. Wear a plain kaftan or maxi dress underneath, add an open-front kaftan on top, then define the waist with a belt or sash.
A short history of the caftan marocain
The caftan has been worn across North Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia for centuries, and it became a central part of Moroccan dress, especially for celebrations. Over time Moroccan styles developed their own signatures: rich trims, fine button closures, wide sleeves and the layered takchita worn by brides and guests.
The caftan marocain is still worn for weddings, religious holidays and family occasions, and it continues to evolve with new colours, prints and lighter fabrics. Wearing a Moroccan-inspired kaftan is a way to enjoy that tradition respectfully; if you want a fully handmade piece, look for a specialist tailor (a maalem) who works in the traditional way.
Moroccan kaftan styles and details
Embroidery and trim
Traditional Moroccan kaftans are known for sfifa, a flat braided trim stitched along the neckline, placket and cuffs, together with small button-and-loop closures. Other pieces carry embroidery in a contrasting thread or sequins around the yoke. When shopping, look at where the decoration sits: a yoke detail frames the face under a hijab, while trim down the front lengthens the figure.
In our kaftans collection, the embroidered jalabiya-style kaftan has embroidery at the neckline and flared sleeves, and the Eid kaftan has a sequin-embroidered yoke. The cotton kaftan carries folk-style embroidery and a tassel tie, and the paisley maxi has a gold-tone neckline. For more decorated pieces, browse our embroidered abayas too.

Sleeves and silhouette
Flared and balloon sleeves are the most Moroccan-feeling choices, because they echo the wide sleeves of a ceremonial kaftan. A straight body with a belt or sash gives a more takchita-like shape, while pin pleats or a button yoke keep the line simple and elegant.
Prints
Printed kaftans borrow from tile, mosaic, kilim and paisley motifs. The pleated printed kaftan opens at the front, so it works on its own or as a top layer, and the pleated boho kaftan dress is a pull-on style in bolder prints.

Kaftan fabrics: cotton, crinkle, satin and rib
Ceremonial Moroccan kaftans are traditionally made in heavier, richer fabrics, while everyday versions use lighter weaves. Here is how the fabrics you will see most often compare.
- Cotton is breathable and easy to wash, so it is the best everyday and summer choice.
- Crinkle fabric has a textured surface that hides creases, which makes it a good choice for travel and long days.
- Satin gives a festive sheen. Ours is a silk-feel satin (it is not silk), and it drapes beautifully for Eid and evening events.
- Fine rib knit is soft and warmer, so it suits a winter kaftan you can wear at home or under a coat.
Our satin kaftan dress has a gathered high neck and a sash belt, which gives you a takchita-style waist in one piece. The crinkle kaftan with lace-trim balloon sleeves is the softer, lighter option.

What to wear when: Eid, weddings, henna and everyday
Eid
For Eid, choose an embroidered or satin kaftan in a soft colour such as sage, dusty pink or emerald, and add one statement accessory. Our Eid 2027 outfit guide has full looks, and the Eid & Ramadan edit gathers festive pieces in one place. Delivery takes 5–15 business days, so as a guide, order by about 1 February for Eid al-Fitr 2027 (expected around 9–10 March, depending on the moon sighting).
Weddings and engagements
Weddings are where the takchita shines. Layer, belt and choose a rich colour, but avoid white and ivory if you are a guest, as these are usually the bride's colours. For more ideas, see our wedding guest abaya guide and our Eid and occasion abayas.
Henna night
Henna evenings are traditionally colourful, and green, gold and jewel tones are popular. Wide sleeves are lovely, but choose a style you can push back or tie so your hands stay free while the henna dries.
Everyday, Ramadan and holidays
A cotton or crinkle kaftan is a calm, comfortable choice for Ramadan evenings, family visits and warm holidays. In winter, a rib kaftan with pockets keeps you warm at home.
How to wear a kaftan with a hijab
- Match the hijab to the detail. Pick out one colour from the embroidery or print, or choose a neutral that lets the yoke stand out.
- Choose the right fabric. A satin hijab suits a satin or sequin kaftan, a chiffon hijab suits festive layers, and a modal hijab suits cotton and everyday kaftans.
- Keep the neckline clear. If the yoke is embroidered, tuck the hijab in or drape it so it frames the detail instead of hiding it. Our hijab styles guide shows several drapes.
- Define the waist, if you like. A sash or belt turns a loose kaftan into a takchita-style silhouette; leave it off for a relaxed look.
- Check the length. Kaftans should skim the ankle or the floor. Use our size guide and allow for the heel height you plan to wear.
Tip: satin hijabs slide on satin kaftans. Wear a snug undercap and use hijab magnets at the shoulder so everything stays in place.
Caring for your kaftan
- Always follow the care label on your garment first.
- Turn embroidered and sequinned kaftans inside out and wash them gently by hand or on a delicate cycle.
- Use a mesh laundry bag for anything with tassels or lace trim.
- Dry kaftans flat or on a wide hanger, away from direct heat.
- Steam satin rather than pressing it hard; if you iron, use a low setting and a cloth.
- Twist and dry crinkle fabric to keep its texture; it does not need ironing.

FAQ
What is the difference between a kaftan and a takchita?
A kaftan is a single-layer long robe, while a takchita has two layers: an under-dress and a decorative over-layer, usually cinched with a belt. Takchitas are typically worn for weddings and formal celebrations, kaftans for a wider range of occasions.
What do you wear under a Moroccan kaftan?
Wear a slip or a light, long under-layer if the fabric is fine or pale, plus your usual undercap and hijab. For a takchita-style look, a plain kaftan or maxi dress acts as the under-dress beneath an open-front kaftan.
Can you wear a kaftan to a wedding?
Yes. A belted satin or embroidered kaftan is a popular wedding guest outfit. Avoid white and ivory as a guest, and choose jewel tones, soft pastels or rich prints instead.
Are Moroccan kaftans modest?
Most are. A Moroccan kaftan is long, long-sleeved and loose by design. Check that the fabric is opaque, the neckline sits high enough under your hijab, and any slits are closed or layered.
How do I wear a kaftan with a hijab?
Pick a hijab colour from the kaftan's embroidery or print, match the fabric to the occasion, such as satin for festive kaftans and modal for everyday ones, and drape it so it frames an embroidered yoke rather than covering it.
