Best Sports Hijab: How to Choose One for Running, Gym & Swimming
Short answer: the best sports hijab is a one-piece, pull-on style in a stretch knit that dries quickly, with a fitted hood that frames your face and a cape over your neck and upper chest. It needs no pins and stays put when you run, lift or jump. For the pool, switch to a swim hijab made from chlorine-resistant swim fabric.
A good sports hijab solves the problems every active hijabi knows: a wrap that slides mid-sprint, a pin that digs in on the bench, a damp scarf by the end of class. Below: how a sport hijab differs, how our five training and swim styles compare, which suits your sport, and how to wear, fit and wash it. For tops and bottoms, see the modest activewear guide.
What makes a sports hijab different?
An everyday hijab is made to drape. A sports hijab is made to stay still while you move. Five features make the difference.
- One piece, pull-on. There is nothing to wrap, pin or re-tie between sets. You slip it over your head and you are ready.
- No pins. Nothing sharp or hard sits near your face if you fall, catch a ball or lie down on a mat.
- Stretch fabric. A four-way stretch knit hugs the head, so the hood does not slide back when you look up or turn quickly.
- Neck coverage built in. A fitted hood covers your head, ears and neck, and a cape continues over the throat and shoulders, so nothing gapes when you bend forward.
- Dries quickly. Our sports hijabs are made in a quick-drying technical knit, so they feel lighter at the end of a session than a cotton or modal scarf would.
Modal and jersey are lovely for everyday wear, but they soak up sweat and get heavy in hard training, so keep a dedicated sport hijab in your gym bag.
Sports hijab vs swim hijab: five styles compared
Hiabaya makes two sports hijabs for training on land and three swim hijabs for the water. All five are one size with a stretch fit for a head circumference of 54–60 cm, but each does a different job.
| Style | Best for | Coverage | Fabric |
|---|---|---|---|
| Printed Sports Hijab | Gym, running, classes, yoga | Head, ears and neck; shaped cape over throat, shoulders and upper chest | Light, breathable, quick-drying stretch jersey; subtle print on the neck and cape |
| Quick-Dry Sports Hijab | Running, cycling, HIIT, team sports | Head, ears and neck; wide flared cape over shoulders and upper chest | Smooth, matte, quick-dry jersey in black or silver grey |
| Pull-On Swim Hijab | Lengths, diving, swimming lessons | Head and full neck, snug fit | Quick-drying swim fabric, chlorine- and salt-water resistant |
| Long Swim Hijab Wrap | Beach, relaxed swims, extra coverage | As much as you wrap: 160 × 55 cm | Smooth, quick-dry swim fabric |
| Swim Turban | Pool, sea and water sports with a hooded or high-neck swimsuit | Full hair coverage; neck left open | Quick-drying swim fabric, chlorine- and salt-water resistant |
The two land styles are cut in a similar way. Choose the printed one if you like a subtle pattern and a closer, shaped cape; choose the quick-dry style if you prefer a plain matte finish and a wider cape that falls further over the shoulders. You will find both in our sport hijabs collection.

How to choose a sport hijab by activity
The right athletic hijab depends on how you move: up and down, side to side, upside down or through water.
Running
A running hijab has to stay still for an hour of small, repeated bounces. Choose a snug pull-on hood rather than a wrap, and keep the cape from flapping by wearing it under a zip jacket or tucking it into a fitted top. For runs at dusk, a lighter print is easier to see than all-black, but it is no substitute for a reflective layer.
Gym and weights
A gym hijab has to cope with lying on a bench and bending over a barbell. The hood should not shift when your head is on the bench, and the cape should cover your chest when you hinge forward. The printed style's closer, shaped cape sits nearer the body, which suits back squats with a barbell on your shoulders.
Yoga and pilates
In downward dog and other inverted poses, gravity pulls a loose cape towards your face. Tuck the cape into a fitted base layer or wear a close-fitting top over it. For hot yoga, a quick-drying knit is kinder than a cotton scarf that stays wet.
Team sports: football, netball, basketball and tennis
For football, netball, basketball or tennis, a pull-on style with no fastenings is the practical choice: nothing can come loose in a tackle. If you play in a league or competition, check your federation's kit rules before match day. Football's Laws of the Game (Law 4), for example, allow head covers that are black or the same main colour as the shirt, are not attached to the shirt and have no protruding parts. A plain black sports hijab meets the colour rule for any team. Rules for other sports and for school PE vary, so ask your coach or club.
Cycling
On a bike, wind lifts anything loose, so tuck the quick-dry style's wider cape into a jacket with a high collar. Helmet tips are below.
Swimming
Our sports hijabs are made for training on land. For the pool or the sea, choose a swim hijab in swim fabric; the swimming section below compares the three styles.
Training in hot weather
Coverage means you sweat more and notice it less. Train early or late on hot days, drink more than you think you need and pick lighter prints outdoors. Our guide to the best hijab for summer covers the fabrics and colours that feel easiest in the heat.

How to wear a sports hijab at the gym (and get the fit right)
Our sports hijabs fit a head circumference of 54–60 cm: measure at forehead level over your hair as you usually wear it (measurements are in our size guide). Then follow these steps.
- Tie your hair low. A flat bun or plait at the nape works best. A high bun pushes the hood back and loosens the face opening.
- Pull it on front first. Hold the hood open with both hands, place the front edge at your hairline, then draw the back down over your bun.
- Set the face opening. The edge should sit at or just in front of your hairline and hug your cheeks without pressing. Run a finger around it to smooth any folds.
- Settle the neck and cape. Pull the cape down so the neck lies flat under your chin and the cape sits evenly over your throat, shoulders and upper chest.
- Tuck or layer. Put your top or zip jacket on over the cape, or tuck the cape into a fitted base layer, so it stays flat while you move.
- Do the movement test. Look up, turn your head, bend forward and jump. If the hood slides back or the neck gapes, re-seat it; if it presses at the temples or leaves marks, it is too tight for you.
Face opening, neck cover and chest coverage
A sport hijab with neck cover should frame your face closely without a gap under the chin, even when you turn your head. Both styles cover the throat and upper chest. If you would like more chest coverage than the cape gives, wear a loose longline top with a high neck over it. You do not need an undercap: the fitted hood already covers your hair.
Tip: do the movement test in front of a mirror at home before your first class. Two minutes of squats and jumping jacks tells you everything about the fit.
What to wear with a sports hijab
The hijab is one piece of a modest training outfit. Add a longline top that covers your hips when you raise your arms, loose bottoms with a secure high waist, and trainers. Our modest activewear collection is built around exactly that combination.
- Base layer plus loose top. A fitted base layer with a mock collar meets the cape at the neck, so no skin shows when you bend. Wear a loose training top over it for weights. Browse training tops and tunics.
- Zip jacket with a high collar. Our full-zip training jacket has a stand-up collar that layers cleanly over a sport hijab, which is ideal for running and cycling.
- Loose trousers. Wide-leg joggers and straight-leg gym trousers stay loose through squats and stretches. See the loose leggings and trousers.
For colour, pair a printed hijab with a plain top in one of its tones, such as sage lattice with sage, or keep a black one for everything.

Headphones, glasses and helmets
Everything that sits on your head works better over one smooth, thin layer than over a wrapped scarf with pins.
Headphones
Both of our sports hijabs cover your ears. Put earbuds in first, then pull the hijab on; the stretch hood helps hold them. Touch controls may not work through fabric, so use your phone or watch. Over-ear headphones sit on top. Outdoors, keep the volume low enough to hear traffic.
Glasses and sunglasses
Put the hijab on first and your glasses on top, arms over the fabric, so you can take them off without disturbing the hood. Goggle straps also go over the swim hijab or turban.
Helmets
For cycling, horse riding, climbing or skiing, a thin one-piece sport hijab is much easier under a helmet than a wrap. Never wear pins or magnets under a helmet. Adjust the helmet with your hijab on: it should sit level on your forehead, and the chin strap should close snugly over the cape. Follow the helmet maker's fitting guidance.
Tip: take your sports hijab with you when you buy a new helmet, goggles or headphones, and try them on together. A helmet that fits your bare head can feel different over fabric.
Swimming: choosing a swim hijab
An everyday hijab absorbs water and grows heavy, and a land sports hijab is not made for chlorine. A swim hijab is made from swim fabric that resists chlorine and salt water, dries quickly and stays opaque when wet. Our three swim hijabs are in the swim hijabs collection.
- Pull-On Swim Hijab. The one for lengths and diving: a snug pull-on fit with full neck coverage that stays on in the water.
- Long Swim Hijab Wrap. A 160 × 55 cm wrap you style yourself for extra coverage over the chest, best for the beach and relaxed swims.
- Swim Turban. A lighter pull-on cap with full hair coverage. It leaves the neck open, so pair it with a hooded or high-neck swimsuit.
Our sport burkini sets include a tunic, swim leggings and a swim hijab; see all burkinis. To pick a swimsuit, read swim dress vs burkini, and for fabric, fit and pool rules see the modest swimwear and burkini guide.

Washing a sports hijab after training
A sports hijab sits against your skin through every session, so wash it after each wear. Always check the care label first.
- Sports hijabs: machine wash cold on a gentle cycle with similar colours. Skip fabric softener, which can coat technical knits. Air-dry, never tumble dry, and do not iron the printed styles.
- Swim hijabs: rinse in fresh water after every swim, then wash cool at 30 °C in a mesh bag without softener. Dry flat in the shade, away from direct sun, and never in the tumble dryer.
Never leave a damp hijab zipped in your gym bag overnight, and own two so one can dry while you wear the other. Our guide on how to wash a hijab covers stains and every other fabric in your drawer.

FAQ
What is a sports hijab?
A sports hijab is a one-piece, pull-on hijab in stretch fabric, made for exercise. A fitted hood covers the head, ears and neck and a cape covers the shoulders and upper chest, so it stays in place without pins.
What is the best sports hijab for running?
Choose a snug pull-on style in a quick-drying knit that does not bounce, and tuck the cape into a zip jacket or fitted top so the wind cannot lift it. Our Quick-Dry Sports Hijab is made to stay put through running, cycling and HIIT.
How do I wear a hijab at the gym?
Tie your hair in a low bun, pull a one-piece sports hijab on front first, smooth the face opening, settle the cape over your throat and chest, and wear your top or jacket over it. Then look up, bend and jump to check that it stays put.
Can you swim in a sports hijab?
It is better not to: land sports hijabs are made for sweat, not chlorine. Choose a swim hijab in chlorine-resistant swim fabric that dries quickly and stays opaque when wet.
Can you wear a hijab to play football?
Yes. Football's Laws of the Game allow head covers that are black or the same main colour as the shirt, are not attached to the shirt and have no protruding parts. A plain pull-on sports hijab is the practical choice, but always check your league's own kit rules.
Do I need an undercap with a sports hijab?
No. A one-piece sports hijab has a fitted hood that already covers your hair and grips on its own. Tie your hair in a low, flat bun so the hood sits smoothly.
How do you wear a bike helmet with a hijab?
Wear a thin one-piece sports hijab with no pins or magnets underneath. Adjust the helmet while wearing the hijab so it sits level on your forehead, and close the chin strap snugly over the cape.
