Prayer Set vs Prayer Dress: How to Choose the Right Prayer Clothes

|Hiabaya Editorial
A one-piece hooded prayer dress and a two-piece prayer set of khimar and skirt side by side on a prayer mat

The short answer: a prayer dress is one piece, a hood or khimar sewn to a floor-length dress, that you pull on over your clothes in seconds; a prayer set is two pieces, a long khimar and a matching skirt, that you can wear together or mix with your own clothes. Choose a one-piece prayer dress for speed at home and on the road, and a two-piece khimar set for long prayers and flexibility. A hooded jilbab sits between the two. This guide compares them on coverage, fabric, fit, travel, kids and care.

Prayer set vs prayer dress: the key difference

Both do the same job. They cover the body except the face and hands, stay opaque, and let you move through standing, bowing and prostration without adjusting anything. Scholars differ on some details, such as the feet, so if you are unsure what applies to you, ask your local scholar or imam. What differs is how the garment is built.

  • Prayer dress (one piece): the head covering is attached, so one movement over the head and you are ready. It is also sold as a prayer dress with attached hijab or a prayer abaya.
  • Prayer set (two pieces): a khimar, the long cape-like head covering, plus a skirt. Each piece also works on its own.

The one-piece prayer dress and the jilbab

A one-piece prayer dress is the quickest thing you can own for salah. Keep it folded by your prayer mat and it goes on over leggings, pyjamas or work clothes in seconds, with no gap between head covering and dress.

Our Prayer Dress, One-Piece with Hood is soft matte crepe, with an attached hooded khimar that frames the face closely and falls over the shoulders and arms to mid-thigh, long sleeves with fitted cuffs and a loose floor-length skirt. It pulls on over the head, with no zips or buttons. The Cotton Prayer Dress with Hood feels lighter: soft cotton with a small dot print, a drawstring hood with tassel ties and very wide batwing sleeves gathered at the wrist.

A hooded jilbab is the same idea, cut to wear outside the home as well. The One-Piece Jilbab with Khimar joins a khimar hood, which falls in a wide cape to below the waist, to a loose floor-length abaya with elastic-gathered wrists, in soft matte crepe and sizes M to XXL. It is one garment for prayer, the mosque and the journey there. Our explainer on jilbab vs abaya vs khimar vs kaftan covers the terms.

Best for: daily prayers at home, quick changes at work or university, travel.

The two-piece prayer set

A prayer set splits the outfit in two: the khimar covers the head, chest, back and arms, and the skirt covers you from the waist down. The classic telekung, or mukena, of Malaysia and Indonesia is built the same way. It takes a moment longer but gives you choices: the khimar alone turns an abaya into a mosque outfit, and the skirt slips over trousers when you pray away from home.

The Prayer Set with Jersey Khimar & Skirt pairs a slip-on khimar, a fitted cap with a band that frames the face and a very long circular cape to the hips, with a matching jersey skirt. It needs no pins, and the soft stretch is comfortable through long prayers.

Best for: taraweeh and long prayers, mosque visits, women who already wear a khimar.

Fabric: cotton, crepe or jersey?

  • Cotton is light, breathable and easy to wash, the relaxed choice for summer and warm homes. It has little stretch, so look for a loose body and generous sleeves.
  • Crepe is matte, opaque and softly textured. It drapes without clinging and shrugs off creases, so it looks neat outside the home too.
  • Jersey stretches, moves with you and needs no pins. A jersey khimar stays close around the face through sujood, which makes it the easiest choice for long prayers.

Whatever the fabric, it should be opaque in daylight and should not cling when you kneel. The hijab fabric guide explains how each fabric behaves.

Fit over your clothes

Prayer clothes go over what you already wear, so allow room for a jumper or a wrapped hijab.

  • Length: the hem should reach the floor when you stand, so there is no ankle gap when you kneel. Check the product page and the size guide.
  • Sleeves: elasticated or fitted cuffs keep sleeves at your wrists when you raise your hands.
  • Face opening: a hood or band that frames the face without pressing on the forehead is kinder for long prayers.
  • Over a hijab: a hooded prayer dress goes over a wrapped hijab when time is short, while a slip-on khimar sits best over a simple undercap. For a hijab that stays neat underneath, see our modal hijab guide.

Prayer clothes for travel and Umrah

For travel, the one-piece prayer dress usually wins: it folds small, needs no matching and turns a hotel room into a place to pray.

For Umrah there is no set garment for women. The general guidance is loose, opaque, modest clothing, with the face and hands left uncovered in ihram, and your group leader or a local scholar can advise on the details. Many women pack two or three plain jilbabs or prayer dresses in neutral colours, plus a khimar for long prayers. The prayer and worship wear guide has a full packing list, and the Ramadan 2027 capsule wardrobe plans ahead for taraweeh; Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin in early February, moon-sighting dependent.

Prayer sets for girls

For children, a two-piece set is usually easier than a one-piece dress: the khimar goes on like a hood and the skirt has an elastic waist. The Girls' Prayer Set, Khimar & Skirt has a long khimar with a fitted face opening that falls past the hips and covers the arms, finished with delicate white lace at the hem and cuffs, plus a matching maxi skirt. It comes in five colours, in sizes from 110 cm (3 to 4 years) to 160 cm (11 to 12 years). The kids' modest wear guide has more ideas.

Care and storage

  • Follow the care label. As a general rule, wash cool on a gentle cycle, inside out, and air dry; skip the tumble dryer, which can shrink cotton and tire jersey.
  • Hang crepe to dry and most creases fall out on their own.
  • If you pray at home and at work, own two so one can live in your bag.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a prayer set and a prayer dress?

A prayer dress is one piece with the hood or khimar attached; a prayer set is two pieces, a khimar and a skirt, that can also be worn separately.

Is a prayer dress with attached hijab better than a two-piece set?

Neither is better. The one-piece is faster and packs easily; the two-piece is more flexible and comfortable for long prayers.

Can I wear a prayer dress over my clothes?

Yes, that is what it is designed for: a loose, floor-length cut sits comfortably over jeans or pyjamas.

What should I wear to pray at the mosque?

A khimar over an abaya, a hooded jilbab or a two-piece prayer set, in opaque, loose fabric.

What size prayer set should I buy for my daughter?

Go by height rather than age. Our girls' set runs from 110 cm to 160 cm; between sizes, the larger one gives room to grow as long as the skirt does not trail.
