A long knit cardigan or duster is the most versatile piece: open at the front, it layers over almost anything and covers the hips and thighs. A knit co-ord set gives you a complete outfit in one, a jumper or jacket over an ankle-length skirt with an elastic waist. A ribbed knit abaya is the cosiest single layer for home, the school run and errands on cold days.

Hand wash knits cold or use a gentle cold programme, and dry them flat so they keep their shape and length; never hang a wet knit cardigan.
