Choosing a prayer mat: thick, padded or travel

A thick, padded prayer rug is the most comfortable choice at home, especially on tiled, wooden or concrete floors, and many people with sensitive knees appreciate the extra cushioning. A thin travel prayer mat folds small, weighs little and fits in a handbag, a work bag or hand luggage. Many families keep a padded mat at home and a pocket mat in the bag. Dimensions and thickness are listed on each product page, so if you are tall, compare the length with your height.

Praying on the go and on Umrah

A pocket prayer mat makes it easier to pray at work, at university, in a park or on a journey. Unfold it on a clean spot, use the compass as a guide to the qibla and fold it back into its pouch afterwards. Travelling for Umrah? Our Umrah outfit guide and packing list covers what to wear and pack, and our guide to prayer and worship wear explains how to choose a prayer dress, khimar or jilbab.

Tasbih and gifts for Ramadan and Eid

Tasbih prayer beads are used to count dhikr, for example SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah and Allahu Akbar 33 times each after prayer. A prayer mat and tasbih gift set is a thoughtful present for Ramadan, Eid, a wedding or someone setting off for Umrah. Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin around 8 February in Europe, so order by mid-January for delivery before Ramadan; each product page shows the delivery estimate. More ideas are in our Ramadan and Eid gifts.

Frequently asked questions

How do I clean a prayer mat?
Follow the care instructions on the product page. As a general rule, shake the mat out regularly and spot-clean small marks with a damp cloth and mild soap. If machine washing is allowed, use a cool, gentle cycle and let the mat dry flat in the air; padded mats should not go in the tumble dryer. Mats with electronics, such as the talking prayer mat for kids, should not be machine washed.
Is a pocket prayer mat good for travel?
Yes. The pocket travel prayer mat folds into a small pouch that fits in a handbag, backpack or hand luggage, so you can pray at work, at university, at the airport or on Umrah. Unfold it on a clean, dry surface. The folded size and weight are listed on the product page.
How accurate is the qibla compass on the travel mat?
Treat it as an approximate guide. A small magnetic compass points to magnetic north, and phones, metal objects, cars, steel beams or electrical devices nearby can throw the needle off. Hold it flat and away from metal, and combine it with the qibla direction for your city. For a reliable check, use a qibla app, the direction of a nearby mosque or ask at your hotel reception.
Which prayer mat thickness should I choose?
Choose a thick, padded mat if you mostly pray at home on hard floors or want more cushioning for your knees and forehead. Choose a thin, foldable mat if it needs to be light and compact for work, school or travel. The thickness of each mat is listed on its product page.
Are a prayer mat and tasbih a good gift?
Yes. The Islamic gift set combines a prayer mat with a tasbih and makes a thoughtful gift for Ramadan, Eid, a wedding or someone going on Umrah. You can order it together with a prayer dress; items may ship from different suppliers and arrive in separate parcels.
